Decks, Fences, and Wood Cleaning
For abbreviation purposes, the word “deck” will be used to encompass all woods such as decks, steps, picket fences, privacy fences, arbors, pergolas, and more.
Understanding Whether to Clean or Strip Your Deck**
While it is important that a deck be protected from the weather, it can make things worse by applying a stain on a surface that has not been properly prepped. Prior to applying a deck stain, the wood should be free of all mold, mildew, dirt, UV sun damage, and any old failing stains. A clean bare wood surface will absorb and bond with the new stain so it performs and protects as expected. Not only will a stain/sealant protect the wood when applied to a clean surface, it enhances the natural beauty of the wood creating a brilliant finish.
Cleaning a deck can be done with a wood deck cleaner or a wood deck stain stripper. When deciding whether to clean or strip before applying a stain, take into consideration the condition of your wood surface. If the wood is just aged, dirty, and grayed, then a quality wood cleaner can be used. When dealing with a deck that has remnants of an old failing stain, a stripper may need to be used instead of a wood cleaner. A stain stripper will soften and emulsify most semi transparent and transparent stains so they can be washed or scrubbed away.
Following the prep steps mentioned above, and prior to applying the stain/sealant, a wood brightening and neutralizing agent should be applied. This solution will lower the pH of the wood to brighten the grain and open the wood pores for acceptance of a new stain. If you are not sure whether or not your deck has an old stain or sealer on it, Pine State can perform water absorption tests to aid in the decision-making process. This cleaning and prep process is called “restoring” or “reviving.”
Once your deck has dried after being revived / restored, Pine State can install a variety of stains: transparent, semi-transparent, waterborne stains, oil-based stains, 100% acrylic stains, solid stains, enamel paints, and more. Head over to our deck staining page for information and pictures!
**NOTE: All of Pine State’s technicians are professionally trained in the handling of wood cleaners, strippers, and brighteners. The mishandling of such chemicals can result in severe body damage, property damage, and more. When handled properly, aforementioned solutions are effective and safe. For this reason, we do not recommend untrained power washers or homeowners attempt to handle any of these products on their own. This article is meant to inform homeowners, not to be a DIY guide.
Restore Your Deck
A detailed deck cleaning paired with our expert staining and weather sealing service can revive and renew the life of your tired wood, adding years of life to your deck or fence*! As your deck ages, the wood loses its natural conditioning moisture/oils. And as the wood dries, moisture enters the wood and evaporates repeatedly causing the wood to shrink and expand. This causes the wood to dry out and splinter, crack, and curl, much in the way the skin on your hands will dry and crack from washing your hands too often. Some boards can even curl so badly that they will pull nails right out of the joists! We can restore your deck by reconditioning the wood! In addition to the obvious revitalization of your deck, wood stain often enhances the natural grain of the wood, resulting in an impressive and show-stopping appearance!
Do you think your deck is too far gone?
Let us be the judge of that! We can perform various repairs such as replacing old deck boards, fixing sagging gates, replacing/repairing pickets, spindles, and railings, and much more. When many think their deck or fence needs to be torn down and rebuilt, we may be able to repair them instead! This can save you THOUSANDS of dollars when compared to the cost of tearing it down to rebuild.
Wood cleaning, stripping, staining, sealing, and repair is as much a part of Pine State‘s business as house washing, concrete cleaning, gutter cleaning, and more. All deck cleaning services include mold, mildew, and algae eradication. Staining and sealing options are available as well.
And don’t forget, we provide free estimates and consultations with absolutely zero obligations.
Unfortunately every deck is different in so many ways. From the spindle style, to the height of the deck, to the condition of the wood, to the condition of the previous stain, and so much more. For that reason, we are unable to provide pricing without physically seeing the deck, and I would question anyone who can put a one-size-fits-all price on a job like this without even looking at the deck!
