  • DAVID BERRY, Owner

David proudly calls Wake Forest, NC home, having been born there in the mid-1980s. His father is a Raleigh native, born and raised in Millbrook from the 1940s (back when it was rural dirt roads and considered “the sticks.”) until his passing in 2010. Wake County runs in David’s blood and it shows in his professional output around town.

David recalls the moment Rose recommended that they start a power washing company… “I wasn’t sure it was something we could actually manage, but I trusted in Rose and myself that we would figure it out one way or another. Failure was not an option.” For the first few years, David spent his afternoons and evenings working in Restaurants while power washing during the day.

During the winter of 2016/2017 he worked 6 to 7 days a week in 3 restaurants so Rose could stay home and care for their young daughter. Times were lean, but they had trust in their system and quality of service, and this was the sacrifice necessary to grow the Pine State name.

Over the years, business continued to grow, fueled by the unrelenting values Rose and David created:

    - Treat the customer with the utmost respect, always.

    - Do what’s right, always.

    - Be open and transparent about pricing.

    - If you say you’re going to do something, stand behind it.

    - Never sell something that is not needed.

Over the years, as employees have come and gone, David and Rose’s message and coaching are the one constant. “We will never compromise on quality” is the first message taught to all new technicians. This is the driving force in our company’s culture, leading to consistency from team to team, season to season, veteran to rookie, and more.

In David’s personal life, he enjoys collecting and reading up on retro video games (namely early 80s to late 90s). Through his passion for old video games, he has joined local communities and made new friends with similar tastes (namely, Raleigh Retro Gamers). David also enjoys Pittsburgh Steelers football, vintage stereo equipment (receivers, turntables, etc), playing catch with his son, baking, cooking, grilling, antiques and old homes, sci-fi and action movies on full volume, and snuggling up with his kids for Family Movie Night.

  • ROSE BERRY, Owner

Although being raised in Long Island, and attending college in Oswego, NY, Rose has called North Carolina home since 2009. In a move from Oswego to Wilmington, NC for work, it is there that she met David Berry. The two quickly hit it off, citing a lowkey first date at a pool hall eating cheese fries and bonding over similar tastes on the jukebox as the moments they knew it was something special.

It was their move to Raleigh in 2012 that sparked their growing entrepreneurial desires. First it was an indoor dog park and bar, then it was various food trucks – none of which got off the ground. But it wasn’t until David’s official professional move to power washing that they knew they landed on the right idea.

With a background in administration, and many years working in the customer service field, Rose saw an opportunity in the Oak City. Dealing with various contractors in her first Raleigh home, shared with husband David Berry, she witnessed firsthand the lack of quality customer care in numerous contractor-based industries. From not showing up, to changing the invoice total after the job, to poor workmanship and communication… Rose couldn’t understand how these companies were thriving.

While David was gaining professional experience in the power washing industry, Rose was cooking up a plan. “What if we had a company that performed top notch work, but paired it with top notch customer service?” So, one day, Rose said to David, “We should start our own power washing company.” David, never afraid of a challenge, agreed.

Fast-forward to 2024, and Rose is the behind-the-scenes master that turns the company’s gears. With two beautiful kids, a growing Yoga and fitness following, and a lovely garden, Rose is more than a one-trick pony. She has a nurturing spirit and is eager to ensure everyone is enjoying themselves at a get-together. She loves Yoga, gardening, hiking, fishing, camping, relaxing at the beach but getting good exercise in the mountains, True Crime docs, and a quiet breezy evening just after the sun has set.

  • AVERY THOMPSON, Supervisor and Lead Technician

Avery calls Charlotte his hometown, although he currently resides in Wilson with his wife and two children. Avery has a strong sports background having grown up thriving on the baseball diamond and the gridiron. Although he will claim that age has caught up to him, we all suspect he still has more strength and athleticism than he lets on.

Avery carries himself with humility, yet is fully confident in his abilities. His sports background and his kind and caring demeanor stood out to us in the interview. Although he came with absolutely no power washing experience, we knew he was the right person for our team.

After David and Rose cleared house in late 2021 with a goal of revamping the company’s culture, Avery joined the Pine State team in early 2022, kicking off an entirely new era. Starting as an assistant-technician, it only took him a few months to prove himself more valuable than that, quickly rising to lead technician. Through continued quality workmanship and customer care, he was promoted to Supervisor and has not looked back.

In Avery’s spare time, he likes to spend time with his family, play pitch and catch with his son, eat good barbeque, and take long weekend trips. He claims the Duke Blue Devils, Carolina Panthers, and Atlanta Braves as his go-to squads. Avery’s known around the company for his humor and sports knowledge.

  • CORY LARSEN, Supervisor and Lead Technician

Cory came to us in 2022, bringing years of professional power washing experience. But it wasn’t the experience that sold us on him, it was his values in faith, family, and leadership (and also he could drive a trailer). Cory grew up in numerous places, namely Knightdale, Sea Grove, and Utah, bouncing back and forth. Upon exiting high school, he joined the Marines, married his high school sweetheart, and now raises 4 beautiful children in Clayton, NC.

Cory cites the Marines as the basis for his type of character today. If we could use three terms to describe Cory’s work acumen, it would be: no-nonsense, “let’s get after it,” and “whatever it takes.” After a little over a decade in the Marines, Cory landed a job a Home Depot manager before deciding the corporate life wasn’t for him. This is when he found his way into power washing for small family-owned companies.

In Cory’s spare time, he enjoys sitting by the river or lake and fishing for hours, even if he catches nothing. He loves going to Church, sporting events, coaching softball for his daughter’s teams, working on his home, good southern food, Dr. Pepper, and making others laugh.

  • ASHTON DESANTIS, Assistant Technician

Ashton joined the Pine State team in early 2023, immediately impacting the quality of work the company puts out. Ashton comes from Rhode Island, moving down south after high school to be with his family. Residing around Louisburg, NC, Ashton enjoys the rural outdoors of his current home.

When we first started working with Ashton, we knew we had lucked into something special. Ashton is beyond consistent in his workmanship, and even the other aspects of being an employee (i.e. showing up to work on time, never complaining about tough assignments, and more). Ashton is easily the strongest team member, routinely taking on the tougher physical projects, and doing it with a smile on his face. What an incredibly bright and kind gentleman, we consider ourselves beyond lucky to have a team member like him.

In Ashton’s spare time, he enjoys spending time with his family, playing with his sister’s young child, playing video games, helping out around the home, lifting weights and exercising, and shooting his guns down at the range.

FORMER MEMBERS

The members below are noted for their positive contributions to the Pine State team over the years. Thank you sincerely for your service to the Wake and Johnston County residents.

Desmond Stephens, Brian Healey, Dustin Johnson, Brian Baker, Jon Ellis, Walter, Garrett, Jake Wade, & Kirk.

  • DESMOND STEPHENS

Desmond and David actually met each other in Raleigh in 2013 when he was playing on the NC State Rugby team. David’s roommate Grant also played on the NC State Rugby team, and Desmond used to come around David and Grant’s house on Sundays to watch football and eat hot dogs. David and Desmond got along really well and had mutual respect for each other.

Desmond was raised in the country of Robeson County and Lumberton, recalling breaking wild horses, farming, and big-truck-riding as some of his youthful moments. He also houses family in Charlotte and Greensboro.

Fast-forward to 2019, Desmond found himself looking for a career change around the same time David was looking for new technicians. Desmond was a great driver, great worker, and was renowned for his strong character. It was a solid fit, and the 2 joined forces. Across the next 2.5 years, Desmond worked his way up to Operations Manager, running 3 crews and oodles of different personalities.

Years later, many longtime Pine State customers still ask about Desmond and wish him well. Desmond was an integral part of the company’s growth, and he will always be remembered and loved.

Desmond currently trains dogs in and around the Greensboro, NC area, a passion he’s held for over a decade. He is a BIG fan of NFL football, especially the Carolina Panthers. Desmond has an eclectic taste in many things, but he cites anime, hard rock and metal, dogs, video games, and a quality ice cold beer as some of his favorites.

  • BRIAN HEALEY

Brian Healey comes from rural upstate New York, finding his way down to Maryland, Tennessee, and eventually Clayton where he currently resides. Through happenstance, Brian applied for the power washing position, not realizing he lived a 3-minute bike’s ride from the company’s shop. We had a good laugh when he found out.

Brian was beyond over-qualified for the position, but when Covid forced him out of a job in 2020, he was eager to stay busy instead of sitting on his laurels. He took an underpaid position because being busy and happy was more important than making more money. In less than a month, we realized the value we had and he was due an immediate raise and promotion to lead.

It was only a matter of time before Brian would depart for bigger and better things, an inevitable fact we discussed in the original interview. But we were happy to work with him for as long as we could keep him.

Brian and David still have a good friendship, going out to local festivals, Super Bowl parties, birthday parties, or just out for a bite and a beer. Brian enjoys spending time with his wife and young son, visiting the local (and not-so-local) breweries in our area, working on his home and yard, lifting weights, running 5ks, 10ks and half-marathons, visiting new cities, and much more. He’s well-known for his outgoing personality, welcoming demeanor, and good humor!

  • DUSTIN JOHNSON

Dustin was Pine State Power Washing’s first full-time employee, hired at the beginning of 2018. Dustin was born and raised in Florida, joining the military and moving to Alaska for just over a decade. Upon returning to the mainland, Dustin found himself in Clayton, NC, where his father had established roots over the previous years.

Dustin raises 3 kids in their new home in the Smithfield/Cleveland area of Clayton, NC, and he has 3 other kids who have flown from the nest. Dustin is a part owner and operator of X-It Pest Control, a quality pest control company serving Johnston County, Wake County, Durham County, and some other areas.

In Dustin’s free time, he loves taking his kids fishing, spending time with his family, eating good wings, sending funny texts to his friends, and watching the Buccaneers NFL team.

  • BRIAN BAKER

Brian may not have been with us for a very long time, but his presence was felt long after. He applied for the power washing position, but instantly showed his strengths as an all-around team player. He took on multiple roles in the company, going far past what he thought he signed up for. What Brian lacked in experience at the beginning, he made up for with character and hard work.

Being born and raised in Joco, Brian calls Smithfield and Clayton home. He grew up in the area playing baseball and basketball. Brian enjoys Carolina Panthers football, college hoops, baseball, fishing, and eating good ol’ southern food (we haven’t seen you in years but we still remember your BBQ order: BBQ sandwich, slaw, Texas Pete right on top of the slaw).
